Santa Barbara’s Legends
Rich, complex, and ageworthy California Cab Franc is FINALLY getting its due.
The prices reflect that. Top Napa Valley Cab Francs have soared into Cabernet Sauvignon territory, with collectors paying $300 and more for the finest bottlings. That’s why the 2021 Foxen 7200 Heritage Cabernet Franc—grown on their historic Tinaquaic Vineyard and typically only available to their wine club—such an outlier. It stands with Napa Valley big-shots like Force Majeure, Paul Hobbs, and The Debate—at a tiny fraction of the price.
Foxen is a defining Santa Barbara producer, and this Heritage Cab Franc stands with the absolute best of Napa Valley. Hailing from the completely dry-farmed Alta Block of their famed Tinaquaic Vineyard, Jeb Dunnuck called it “another sensational expression of Cabernet Franc,” wrapping his review with “Bravo!”
It’s impossible to overstate Foxen’s importance in Santa Barbara’s wine history. Founded in 1985, their intense, balanced wines helped put the county on the map. They catapulted into superstardom after the movie Sideways, all while making wines that Galloni praised as “some of the most compelling wines I taste anywhere in the world.”
The Tinaquaic Vineyard is Foxen’s original site, planted on land that co-founder Dick Doré's ancestor purchased. Featuring low-yielding vines with deep root structures, the site is perfectly situated for the warm, sunny days and cool, Pacific nights that grapes love. The day’s heat brings power, while evenings allow for vibrant acidity and long hang-times. Factor in the ranch’s well-drained loam and you’ve got an ideal setting for Cab Franc to thrive.
After 22 months in 50% new French oak barrels, this gorgeous wine earned stunning raves—and has only been available to Foxen’s wine club. We’re lucky to have it.
