Grand Cru in All But Name

Domaine Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy’s legendary producers—owners of the entirety of Clos de Tart, a monopole Grand Cru in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis.

Founded in 1141 by the Bernardine sisters of the Abbey of Tart, this historic estate in Morey-Saint-Denis has maintained an unwavering commitment to excellence through nearly nine centuries of winemaking. The vineyard has been so prized that, through the centuries, it’s only had four owners.

Now it’s one of the crown jewels of the Pinault family’s Artémis Domaines—which also manages Château Latour—and Clos de Tart’s wines have never been better.

And if you want proof of that sterling quality, look no further than the 2021 Le Forge de Tart.

Although it’s labeled as a Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, this is 100% from young(er) vines in the Clos de Tart—the core of this comes vines that today are approaching their 15th birthday, along with some from the Bonnes Mares border and two other blocks that are planted to high quality massale stock.

It’s quite literally Grand Cru in all but name, labeled down the hierarchy solely because of the stratospheric quality and pricing of the Domaine’s eponymous wine.

In the cellar, this is treated to the élevage we expect from Burgundy of that caliber as well. It sees touch of whole-bunch fermentation for complexity and then a luxurious rest in a mix of high-end French oak, with a decent bit of new wood in the mix. The result is a captivating wine that offers beautifully fine-grained tannins married to a classic mix of floral, red fruit, and spice notes. We could smell it for hours, and it’ll age beautifully—just like the Grand Cru it secretly is.
