    Sancerre + Rosé? Yes, Please

Perfect rosés are crisp, minerally, and energizing. We’d describe the best Sancerres the same way—and there’s nothing more mouthwatering, vibrant, and invigorating than a truly great Sancerre rosé.

Domaine Dominique et Janine Crochet makes one of the best Sancerre rosés out there. The Crochet name is synonymous with the town of Bué, one of the three greatest villages in the Sancerre appellation, and their beautiful 2021 rosé shows exactly why we love the category: It takes the crisp acidity we treasure in top white Sancerre and adds beautiful strawberry and orange-zest aromas to the mix.

The richest, most finely structured and refined wines in Sancerre are grown in three villages—including Bué—perched just a few kilometers apart, where steep hillside plantings are littered with chunks of precious limestone. Crochet’s rosé draws from these soils, which help preserve electric acidity, and vines planted on silex, which bring more fruit flavor to the table and are perfect for Pinot Noir rosé.

Hailing from Bué, winemaker Teddy Crochet was a rugby star before returning to his family’s estate as an apprentice to his dad, Dominique. Sadly, Dominique passed away over a decade ago, so Teddy hung up his cleats and got to work, injecting his youthful energy in the vineyard and the cellar—and now turns out brilliant wines that stand tall with those of his illustrious neighbors.

For this rosé, he harvests the Pinot Noir with enough acidity to be vibrant on the palate but ripe enough that there’s soft fruit to balance, then ferments and ages the wine in stainless-steel tanks to preserve brightness and purity of flavor. The result is a wine you won’t stop pouring all spring and summer.
