A Hidden Block of Stunning Loire Value

Just about 90 miles east of Vouvray, located just off a tributary of the Loire River, lies a 300-acre appellation that just might be the greatest Sauvignon Blanc secret in France.

It’s called Reuilly, and although it’s small and quiet compared to its flashier Loire counterparts, this little nook is capable of producing marvels of sleek tension and crystalline depth that can rival France’s more famous Sauvignon Blancs—including Sancerre.

No one delivers on the region’s promise better than Domaine de Reuilly.

They’re the foremost practitioner of biodynamic winemaking in the appellation, and their marvelously focused, piercingly aromatic Reuilly Les Pierres Plates—a small-production release—has the potential to reshape your understanding of value in the Loire. It’s certainly done that for our members, who have bestowed a 4.3-star rating on it.

Vigneron Denis Jamain has made it his life’s work to realize the full potential of Reuilly terroir. In 1935, his grandfather planted the vines that Denis tends with immaculate care today. The vineyards are just two miles from the winemaker’s home, and so close to his heart that he carries a stone imprinted with a trademark fossil from the region. He has an intimate knowledge of every inch of the land, and he shows his respect for the terroir through rigorous biodynamic farming.

Denis’s Sauvignon Blanc vines occupy the driest part of the Centre-Loire. Just the right amount of precipitation helps lead to excellent ripening, while a relatively cool climate extends hang-time, allowing the berries to layer complex fruit notes over a bedrock of ultra-crisp acidity.

The result is a small-production rarity that gives new expression to coveted Loire terroir.
