Stewards of the Environment Since 1972
The Salinas Valley was a different place back in 1972. When Al Scheid planted his first vineyard there, he never envisioned building his own winery to receive visitors; all he wanted to do was plant grapes and sell them to other wineries.
The northern benches of Monterey’s Salinas Valley boast cool, windy, and foggy conditions that happen to be perfect for growing Pinot Noir of great character, texture, and structure. The 2021 District 7 Pinot Noir, produced by the Scheid family, struck us as the essence of super-drinkable Monterey Pinot Noir.
Al and his children Scott and Heidi use low-impact farming methods to lessen soil compaction, control pests, and promote beneficial insects and microbiologic activity in their vineyards. They compost 100% of the pomace and spread it back into the fields. The winery and substantial bottling line are 100% powered by wind energy, all supplied by a 396-foot wind turbine. And there’s enough power left over to power 125 homes!
The Scheids harvest block by block, based on flavor and ripeness rather than sugar and acidity numbers, ensuring picks that maximize flavor over uniformity. The Scheid family’s 12 estate vineyards, across over 3,000 acres, are all certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, and most are farmed organically.
The 2021 District 7 Pinot Noir Monterey County is fresh, fruity, and vibrant, capturing the essence of Monterey-grown, pristine Pinot Noir. A lively bright ruby decorates the glass. Aromas are led by bing cherry and pomegranate, embraced by fresh red roses and rhubarb, with a hint of holiday spice. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a weeknight burger or something as fussy as tea-smoked duck breasts.
