It All Began With Coastlands Vineyard
In Wine Access’s 20-year history, we’ve had the fortune to offer just about every blue-chip bottle out there, from Kosta Browne and Williams-Selyem to RAEN and Marcassin. But one Sonoma Coast Pinot jewel remained elusive: Cobb Wines.
To get a sense of Ross Cobb’s status on the Sonoma Coast, just look at the wineries that have recruited him: Burt Williams and Bob Cabral of Williams-Selyem nabbed him in 1998. Flowers hired him away in 2000, eventually making him head winemaker. Then David Hirsch called, asking to do the same, in 2009.
Ross’s 2021 Coastlands Pinot Noir makes it easy to see why his wines currently have SEVEN slots on the list at the MICHELIN three-star SingleThread. It earned 96+ points from Wine Advocate, who declared it “powerful and nuanced.”
Coastlands Vineyard (and later Cobb Wines) came to life through the hands of Ross and Stephen Cobb, alongside their folks David and Diane, who started out as home winemakers with a backyard vineyard in Mill Valley. The couple decided to go pro in 1989, relocating to Occidental. There, atop a hill with a view of Bodega Bay, the whole family worked together to plant four acres of Pinot Noir. Williams-Selyem bought the first five vintages of his fruit, and they’ve vineyard-designated a Coastlands Pinot Noir to this day.
The family launched Cobb Wines in 2001, and part of Ross’s business plan—like luminaries Littorai and Peay—was to focus primarily on restaurants, and that has paid off. The wines are in the greatest restaurants in Northern California, but it’s rare at retail. We’re thrilled to have gotten it for you.
