So Good, We Had to Import It Ourselves
Faugères is a hidden gem even in the Languedoc, the relatively unexplored region west of Provence. In fact, it’s rare to see a bottle from the appellation in a caviste in Paris, much less on shelves on American shores.
But the top bottles, like Château Estanilles Sous Les Rocs Blanc, are absolutely stunning.
Estanilles is one of the superstars of the region—featured in Forbes as one of five wineries to remember in the entire Languedoc, crafting what Decanter praised as “remarkable wines”—but good luck finding their bottles in the US. We got so tired of missing the wines that we direct-imported this 95-point white ourselves.
Made from 60% Marsanne and 40% Roussanne—the same grapes that compose the famed Hermitage Blanc from the Rhône—it’s full-bodied and bold yet retains an elegance and bright edge that keeps everything perfectly in harmony.
That liveliness is a trademark of Faugères, according to Estanilles’ winemaker and owner, Julien Seydoux, who told Forbes: “Faugères is like a UFO in the Languedoc. It’s peculiar, singular. Here in Faugères we have more hills and schist than other nearby regions of Languedoc. This appellation is very homogenous, with freshness and minerality.”
“Sous Les Rocs” means “under the rocks,” a nod to soil in the vineyard this cuvée hails from, called Les Roques (the rocks). It’s stony, even by Faugères standards, and produces grapes of unusual intensity. They’re pressed as whole clusters to add structure, then aged in oak barrels to help round out the texture—and the result is brilliant. Rich but balanced, awash with tropical fruit and a creaminess reminiscent of the best Rhone whites, it’s spectacular enough to be the centerpiece of any dinner or date night.
