    After the Flood

They’re known as the Missoula Floods, and at the end of the last ice age, they blasted water, soil, and rocks from what is now Montana across eastern Washington and into Oregon. Their power can hardly be overstated: Boulders were rolled miles and miles by waters rushing at over 45 miles per hour, and it’s estimated that the water flow eclipsed that of every river in the world—by a factor of 10!

Since that event occurred over 10,000 years ago, the land that is now home to the Klipsun Vineyard had gone uncultivated, untouched even. That’s until 1984, when Patricia and David Gelles saw the massive potential in this parcel. They assumed the huge risk of planting it to vines, given that nothing but sagebrush had grown there before.

Four decades later, that gamble has paid off in a site that the Seattle Times says it grows “some of the state’s best wine grapes.” Neighboring some of the state’s other true greats, like Ciel du Cheval and Kiona Vineyards, this vineyard has gone into the finest wines in Washington: Quilceda Creek, Leonetti, Andrew Will and others.

Laurent Montalieu is the man behind Soléna—perhaps Wine Access members’ favorite brand of all time—and if anything characterizes his strength, it’s his uncanny ability to deliver greatness by accessing spectacular fruit. Most of this has been in service of Pinot Noir, but over his three decades in the PNW, he’s put together a staggering Rolodex, so it’s no surprise that he was able to cross the Columbia and score from one of Washington’s greatest sites.

The result is a staggeringly good Cabernet from an all-star vineyard and producer. Don’t miss it.
