    Generations of Sonoma-County Farming Acumen!

When you farm over 5000 acres of grapevines, a new vineyard source has to be pretty damned good to catch your attention during the frenzy of harvest.

The call came from Clay Shannon’s nephew, Mark Sanchietti, in the summer of 2020. “Got any room in the barn for 15 tons of killer Russian River Chardonnay?” he said. Shannon didn’t hesitate, and the two men struck a deal.

Shannon Ridge’s 2020 Crossbow Chardonnay is almost too good to be true: certified sustainable and farmed by a fourth-generation local, it’s a single-vineyard wine from a Russian River site that is a go-to for Sonoma County icons like Sonoma-Cutrer.

Shannon Ridge proprietor Clay Shannon is a farm boy from Healdsburg who grew up a 4-H kid. Today, he owns over 2000 acres in Lake County, 1000 of which are vineyards he planted himself and farmed organically. He doesn’t use any lawnmowers, just sheep, which he also rents out to other property owners.

Shannon is self-made: He rose through the ranks to eventually become manager for all vineyard operations at Trinchero before he set out on his own. It’s taken him 25 years to get here, but today his “Home Ranch,” in the heart of the Russian River Valley, is one of the largest 100% certified organic vineyards in the United States.

Crossbow was made by Joy Merrilees, who honed her craft as an assistant to the legendary Jed Steele, the very first winemaker at Kendall-Jackson.

Rich and flashy in its concentration yet contained and elegant on the palate, this wine is the kind of stunner that will turn heads when you greet your dinner party guests with a beautifully golden glass.
