    An All-Around Crowd-Pleaser

He inherited an interest in wine from his father, one of the top collectors in the country. He became a Master Sommelier in 1989, and Robert Parker himself has called him “one of the finest palates and selectors of top wine, whether it be an inexpensive Muscadet or a top of the line Burgundy."

Now, with over four decades in the wine business, Fran Kysela’s name is pure gold—but some of his most impressive work doesn’t have his name anywhere near it. That project is called Rubus, a brand he created to capture estate-grown but NDA-protected wines and offer them at incredibly fair prices.

Kysela knew he was onto something when his first batch, a 1997 Amador Zinfandel, sold out within days. The momentum grew, and a buzz ensued in the trade. For 20 years now, savvy sommeliers and retail buyers keep a sharp eye out for these incredible bargains, which can come from sources as diverse as Barossa Valley, Italy’s Veneto, and Napa Valley.

His 2020 Rubus Pinot Noir Reserve Russian River Valley is selected from a source near Dutton Estate on prized Goldridge soils. These soils are responsible for some of the greatest wines in the Russian River Valley, such as Merry Edwards, Flowers, and Paul Hobbs. Combined with Russian River’s foggy, ocean-influenced climate, it offers the perfect conditions to challenge the vines, yielding flavorful, concentrated grapes.

So it’s no wonder that this Pinot Noir floored Wine Access’ own Master Sommelier and Master of Wine at our judging panel. It’s a Pinot lover’s dream, a wine equally at home with cherry-glazed, five-spice smoked duck breast as it is with a weeknight cheeseburger.
