    Sicily’s Wild, Wonderful Cerasuolo

"If you followed my adventures earlier this year in Sicily, you know I love this wild place and its wonderful wines," says Wine For Normal People’s Elizabeth Schneider about Sicily—the source of the 2020 Nicosia Sabbie di Sutta Cerasuolo di Vittoria.

This chillable, crushable red is a shining example from Sicily's only DOCG. The blend harmoniously combines the richness of Nero d'Avola (60%) with the bright, lifted character of Frappato (40%), creating a medium-bodied wine that dances between power and elegance. These two grapes complement each other perfectly, the Nero d'Avola providing depth and structure while the Frappato adding brightness and aromatic lift.

Nicosia was founded in 1898, and the accumulated wisdom passed down over the generations has led to an enviable collection of vineyards whose sandy soils of the area encourage roots to grow deep and seek water. Breezes off the Mediterranean sea moderate temperatures and allow for a longer growing season. Nicosia farms their sites organically, and ferments their grapes in stainless steel tanks to emphasize the fresh nature of the wine. After careful hand-harvesting in late September, the grapes undergo a gentle 24-hour cold maceration before fermentation, preserving their vibrant flavors and aromatic complexity.

Tenute Nicosia's approach perfectly captures Sicily's blend of tradition and innovation. Founded in 1898, this family-owned estate combines time-honored techniques with modern precision, aging most of the wine in stainless steel to maintain freshness, with just a touch seeing time in tonneaux for added complexity.

This thoughtfully crafted Cerasuolo di Vittoria brings together the best of old and new Sicily—deeply rooted in tradition yet vibrantly alive in the glass.
