A Value That Rivals Australia’s Best
In June 1996, Wine Spectator blasted out “Australia Hits the Big Time” on a cover featuring three towering bottles of Shiraz. Two were collector-favorite bottlings: the ultra-pricy Henschke Mount Edelstone and Penfolds Grange. The third was from Mount Langi Ghiran, an outfit that had been relatively obscure—until that cover launched it to worldwide recognition.
Demand skyrocketed, especially domestically. That’s why 80% of Mount Langi’s outstanding Cliff Edge Shiraz never leaves Australia, and why we had to work for years to nab our first allocation.
This is “a benchmark cool-climate shiraz,” according to star Aussie publication Halliday Wine Companion, who declared the 2020 “yet another impressive, elegant Shiraz from a strong vintage….That's a WOW!”
Mount Langi Ghiran founder Trevor Mast began humbly, toiling in a tin shed that smelled of garlic from the salamis that the winery’s founders used to cure there. First as a consulting winemaker, then as the owner, Mast set about doing something revolutionary: creating a cool-climate Australian Shiraz.
He picked the perfect region. The Grampians can put out peppery, complex Shiraz that’s got more in common with the Northern Rhône than with the highly extracted Shiraz typically associated with Australia. His vision and hard work are what set Mount Langi Ghiran up for the spotlight on that momentous Spectator cover.
One sip of the 2020 Cliff Edge will show you not only why Halliday Wine Companion singled it out as a 96-point special value, but why our members have praised it as “astounding at the price.” It’s one of Australia’s most overachieving bottles.
Mount Langi Ghiran has earned a permanent place among Australia’s top wineries, and the impeccably crafted 2020 Cliff Edge shows why.
