    Napa’s “Entre-Deux-Mers”

EVERYBODY in Napa Valley knows Gamble.

Their sprawling Oakville plot sits among a half-dozen of Napa’s greatest properties, and they’ve sold their grapes to a bevy of top-end Cabernet aces—Thomas Rivers Brown, Paul Hobbs, and Philippe Melka have all been on the roster.

But the Gamble family keeps one plot away from the Cabernet craze: a 20-acre vineyard that dips down into the Yountville AVA, where some of Napa’s most sought-after Sauvignon Blanc grows. The site, which is protected from the late-afternoon sun by the Yountville Hills, is a hidden white-wine paradise, and it produces one of our absolute favorite Sauvignon Blancs in the Valley.

What makes Gamble’s spot, which sits just around the hills from the Totem Vineyard that produces Lail’s $160 Georgia Sauvignon Blanc, so good for white grapes? First, the area is at the very northern reaches of the cooling fog that comes up from San Pablo Bay. Second, it’s protected from the late-afternoon sun by the Yountville Hills, so it gets a break from the Napa heat and enjoys a long growing season relatively free of extremes.

Third, Gamble’s site sits between the Napa River and Conn Creek, and is bordered in the north by Rector Creek. The subtle cooling influence of these small waterways allows the grapes to retain their acidity and express both richness and freshness. Proprietor Tom Gamble sees the vineyard as the spiritual cousin of France’s Entre-Deux-Mers appellation, which sits between the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers and produces some of the best white wines in Bordeaux.
