Prime-Time St. Helena Sites Meet Big Talent
St. Helena’s Cabernets do not come cheap.
The AVA is known for names like Spottswoode ($225) and Beckstoffer’s legendary Dr. Crane Vineyard, which produces a set of bottles that’ll easily set you back $300 or more.
They all boast St. Helena’s signature of beautifully dark, juicy fruit balanced by silky tannins—and so does the 2020 Founder’s Ranch Saint Helena, which is made from PRIME St. Helena sites by the same team that crafted 1881, our #1 selling Cabernet of the last few years: Jean-Charles Boisset and 100-point wizard Phillipe Melka.
This is bold and beautiful, silky and aromatically expressive—and if it weren’t our long-standing relationship with the winery, it’d be a LOT more expensive.
Though Jean-Charles Boisset was born in Burgundy, he’s the guy you want making your Napa Cabernet. Named to Decanter’s Power List, and honored with Wine Enthusiast’s Innovator of the Year award, Boisset has off-the-charts charisma, a flair for the dramatic, and refined yet decadent taste—just like his Founder’s Ranch St Helena Cabernet.
But Boisset isn’t the only legend who had a hand in this overachieving Cabernet. 100-point winemaking guru Philippe Melka (Brand, Hundred Acre, Quintessa, Seavey), consults for all of Boisset’s projects.
Drawn off of Jean-Charles’ impressive vineyards, this Cabernet was given an extended maceration to ensure a big, bold personality and then polished over a luxurious 18 months in 25% new French oak—technique we’d associate with some of the fanciest bottles in the AVA. The result blew us away, and we’ll be drinking it over the next half-decade with steaks off the grill and fennel-pollen dusted roast chickens.
