A Sought-After Jewel of Burgundy
“Special” isn’t a good enough word for the kind of Burgundy terroir that merits a dedicated feature in the New York Times.
“Magical” is more like it.
In June, Eric Asimov of the Times dedicated an entire feature to Clos de la Perrière, a 15-acre monopole that for over 150 years has been owned exclusively by Domaine Joliet. The site, first planted by Cistercian monks way back in the 12th century, was by the 1800s broadly regarded as equal to Chambertin, Musigny, Échézeaux, and Bonnes Mares—Grands Crus that collectors know very well.
Due to some twist of fate whose details are now lost, Clos de la Perrière was classified as a “mere” Premier Cru. And for that reason, Domaine Joliet’s spectacular 2020 Clos de la Perrière might be one of the greatest two-digit Pinot Noirs in Burgundy.
"This is one of the best Fixins I have ever tasted," said our Master Sommelier, Sur Lucero when he took in the ruby-red Pinot that we’d brought back in our suitcase. From a warm vintage that produced what Wine Advocate Burgundy maven William Kelley called “striking wines,” it’s awash in rich, luxurious aromas of red fruit accented by vanilla, herbs, and menthol. With a Grand Cru–level balance of power and elegance on the palate, showing juicy acidity and a long, drawn-out finish, this bottle will thrive in the cellar for three more decades at least.
In 2020, a vintage that Decanter’s Charles Curtis MW called “exceptional” and rated 4.5 out of five stars, Domaine Joliet produced a bottle that does its impressive heritage proud. We’re thrilled to be the ones to share it with you.
