    The Hike Was Worth It…Mostly

We were promised a panoramic view… but halfway up the slope we realized we should have asked what we had to do to earn it.

After all, there was a lot of choucroute the night before. A few orders of tarte flambée before that. And the meal concluded with a perfectly ripe, gooey Munster cheese, accompanied by some mirabelle eau-de-vie. And then another round of eau-de-vie. Frankly, counting is for amateurs.

But we were so entranced by Jean-Marc Bernhard’s 2020 Wineck-Schlossberg Riesling in our glasses at dinner that we demanded our Alsatian pal Franck point out the vineyard that produced it. He was hosting us in his hometown of Katzenthal, and he said he could do one better—the vineyard towers over the village, and we could hike up tomorrow morning and enjoy a superlative view from the top.

Which is how we found ourselves not-so-rapidly ascending up the Wineck-Schlossberg vineyard, noting its steep slope and loose granite soils with each heavy footstep.

And yet, like all fun hikes, the work was forgotten when we reached the top and gazed down at the town below…and it was about lunchtime, so why not uncork another bottle of Jean-Marc Benrhard’s Riesling from the vineyard below us.

The vineyard of Wineck-Schlossberg is far from a secret, but Jean-Marc Bernhard’s bottling from it is…at least for Americans. Frankly, anyone with holdings in the Grand Cru vineyard is on the radar of Alsatian enthusiasts, but high-dollar names like Zind-Humbrecht ($75) and Albert Mann ($65) are the most common bottlings on our shores. Jean-Marc Bernhard’s displays the class and poise of more expensive wines—you’ll be glad you’ve got some.
