    Under the Radar for Generations

We don’t blame any Burgundy lovers who are still starstruck by the 2019s—but let us be the first to tell you that 2020 is poised to be a positively stellar year.

“The unique conditions…of 2020 mean it is an exceptional Burgundy vintage,” said Decanter’s Charles Curtis MW, who rated the warm season a rare 4.5 stars—just half a notch below flawless. Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, a Burgundy resident and savant, said: “Distinguished by their deep, saturated hues, prodigious concentration and vibrant flavors, the best 2020 reds are striking wines, built for the ages.”

Here’s the thing: low yields in 2020 mean that Burgundies from the year will be scarce, and a short crop in 2021 means prices will continue to climb. That’s especially true for prestigious villages like Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, and Gevrey-Chambertin, where village-level wines often creep into the triple-digit range.

That's why we were so thrilled to taste the 2020 Terroir du Domaine Gevrey-Chambertin from pioneering winery Domaine Gerard Seguin. Seguin, an influential producer that pioneered vine-grafting in Burgundy, prunes for low yields and farms by the ecologically minded concept of lutte raisonnée. Their sensational Gevrey, grown on deep-rooted 70-year-old vines in the Le Reniard climat—down the slope from Le Chambertin itself—captures the beauty of a warm, low-yielding vintage with its old-vine sap and seductive profile.

Conditions in 2020 led to yields that were 20–40% lower than usual, while the grape skins were extremely deep in color, helping make 2020 a vintage akin to dark, structured years like 2005 and 2015.

The 2020 Seguin Gevrey-Chambertin is drinking great today—and it will also look great a few years down the road.
