Oak Knoll Focus, Intensity, and Beauty…For Less Than $20

Courtney Benham wines have become some of our members’ favorites because they deliver exceptional value from Napa—one of the hardest regions in the world in which to find bona fide bargains. Built on the veteran winemaking of Vineyard 29 ace Keith Emerson, and aged in a combination of oak and stainless steel, Benham’s 2020 Chardonnay captures the essence of the foggy, green hills in Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll appellation.

James Suckling praised it for its “excellent length and concentration” in his 93-point review, and that’s exactly what we loved in our judging panel. It’s rich with aromas of nectarine, yellow plum, golden raspberry, and Bosc pear. One sip will have you mulling over creamy lemon curd, jasmine, honeysuckle, and vanilla notes that linger on a satisfying finish.

Courtney Benham is an industry veteran who runs the hit estate Angeline and revived the historic Martin Ray property—and he’s exceptionally picky when it comes to wine with his name on the label. This bottle began with grapes from Napa’s cool-climate Oak Knoll AVA, where the chill from San Pablo Bay and the rays of the beaming California sun lead Chardonnay to freshness and ripeness at the same time.

Raised on a family farm in Bakersfield, Benham learned the wine business from his father. Now, his connections throughout California—forged over his long career producing top-rated wines—means that he gets access to fantastic grapes for a reasonable price. This Chardonnay is the latest in his long line of winemaking triumphs, and it’s an extraordinary example of how good value-priced Napa Valley can be.
