The source estate behind today’s wine is famous for opulent, full bodied, highly coveted reds that have earned countless accolades. Their bottles have landed on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 multiple times and won a staggering TEN 100-point scores from Wine Advocate.
The house métier is CLASSIC California Cabernets and Merlots—the kind you’re guaranteed to find in luxury-level steakhouses and on the easy-to-reach shelves of collectors’ EuroCaves. Given the winery’s massive prestige, even our ironclad NDA with them feels like a fig leaf!
The 2020 Cosmologist Red was made at the source’s winery from estate-grown grapes in a remote, rugged Knights Valley vineyard, but you won’t find it sold at the tasting room—yet. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, this bottling represents the first fruits of the owner’s recent forays in biodynamic farming.
After a visit to Burgundy and Champagne, the estate’s owner decided to integrate some of the biodynamic farming methods used at places like Domaine de Romanée-Conti or Cristal on plots of his prized Sonoma vineyard.
The results, even within a year or two, were extraordinary. By increasing the biodiversity surrounding the site, boosting insect and animal populations, tending to soil health, and doing almost all work in the vineyard by hand, they came away with grapes that were ringing with vibrancy and energy while losing none of their density or richness.
The results are an outrageous success: velour-textured Sonoma concentration magnified by the purity and transparency of rigorous vineyard management principles.
