A Royal Côte de Nuits Terroir
Since the 1700s, the historic Bouchard winery has been assembling one of the greatest collections of properties in Burgundy—and in the gorgeous 2020 vintage, they made a stunner from one of the most prestigious villages in the region: Gevrey-Chambertin.
Like the other exclusive addresses in the Côte d’Or (Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-St.-Denis) the village of Gevrey proudly annexed the name of its most famous vineyard. Originally Champ de Bertin (meaning “Bert’s Field”), the Chambertin name commemorates the farmer who first planted vines there some nine hundred years ago. All of the vineyards feature Burgundy’s favored east and southeast exposures, and the appellation is dense with Grand and Premier Cru sites.
While neighbors Chambolle and Marsannay might be known for their purity and austerity, Gevrey is prized for its muscular dark-fruit intensity. This dark ruby wine is rich with aromas of cherry and blackberry, touched by a layer of Earl Grey tea, incense, and exotic spice. The palate offers a muscular body, with dark fruit, spice, and balanced acidity.
Winemaker Vincent Bottreau oversees the historic Bouchard winery, whose name is synonymous with sky-high quality in Burgundy. The grapes for this 2020 Gevrey were harvested in small crates before being painstakingly sorted and fully destemmed. After three weeks of maceration with frequent punch-downs, the wine was aged for over 16 months in casks, only about 20% of them new.
Bottled lightly filtered, this is a stellar red Burgundy that shows why Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the most celebrated grape-growing locations in France, and why Bouchard Aîné & Fils is one of the region’s most respected names. Enjoy it now, or let it develop with a short-to-medium stint in the cellar.
