Toro’s First and Only “Best In Show” Honor
In 2022, there were 1,358 Spanish reds entered in Decanter’s World Wine Awards. The 2020 Bodegas Mazas Roble Toro outscored 99.2% of them—becoming the FIRST EVER Toro wine to take the Best In Show crown. A powerful combination of bold, Napa-like depth, this wine earned a staggering 97-point score from the DWWA’s expert panel. It channels the power of Toro’s old vines and warm climate into a dense, multifaceted red—a surefire star to keep close at hand!
The key to this wine is the expert rendering of fruit from these gnarly 50-80 year old vines, and the modern equipment and temperature control at Bodegas Mazas. A new winery with aging cellars that are over 20 feet underground, no expense is spared to produce world-class Toro wines here—most notably, the exclusive use of French oak for aging.
There are many shades of Tempranillo in Spain, but the biggest, baddest, and boldest ones are found in Toro. That’s why Toro should be on the radar of every Napa Cabernet lover or anyone who loves rich, fruit-driven red wines.
Think of Toro as kind of a supercharged Rioja: blacker, fuller, and dominated by the local clone of Tempranillo called Tinto de Toro. Wine has been made in this sweltering, dusty corner of Castilla y Leon since before the Romans came, and by the 13th century it was the preferred wine of the Castilian royal court.
Whatever preconceptions you might have about affordable Spanish reds, this bull will charge right through them. It’s a wine to crack anytime you’ve got a ribeye on the grill, maybe with a generous dollop of romesco waiting on the plate.
