This Is Why Sassicaia Is an Icon
Straight to the point: Sassicaia is the granddaddy of all Super Tuscans, and the 2019 is one of the greatest editions of all time.
It earned 100 points from Decanter—the only Italian wine from the 2019 vintage to do so—which called it “one for the long haul.” Wine Advocate praised it as “one of the prettiest and most balanced editions of Sassicaia we've seen this past decade.”
This is the rare Super Tuscan that stands with the First Growths of Bordeaux. It’s an absolute must for collectors of the world’s iconic red wines.
In the 1920s, the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the man who created Sassicaia, was determined to see if he could match the First Growths of France on his native soil. He decided to plant cuttings of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon at his Tenuta San Guido estate across the Tyrrhenian Coast.
Initially, the wine was derided in Italy, as its brusque power ran contrary to the light-bodied red wines in style at the time. But with aging, stunning nuances sprung to the fore—elegance and power married in a sumptuous package. The next leap in quality came with the help of the Marchese’s nephew, winemaker Piero Antinori, and the famous enologist Giacomo Tachis. Within years, Sassicaia was recognized as a king among peers, inspiring countless imitations.
The outer limits of this wine’s aging potential are anyone’s guess. The 2019 will go 20 years for sure, but if you can stay away from it, a grandkid might be uncorking it at their wedding. Whether your eye is on the long or short term, this is a golden opportunity to acquire a bucket-list bottle.
