“One of the Most Sophisticated Whites in Napa”
The name Spottswoode evokes respect and romance for anyone who appreciates fine wine. Since its inception, the estate has become a hallmark of St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon and biodynamic farming in the Valley, decorated with 95-100 point reviews in even the most difficult of vintages. The wines are in such high demand that they rarely make it to our office, despite our long-lasting relationship with the coveted winery. So when we got the chance to offer our members the highly expressive and powerful 2019 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc Napa-Sonoma Counties, we jumped at the opportunity.
This incredible 2019 release bursts with the pedigree of this legendary estate, showcasing bright citrus flavors, green pineapple, and Mandarin blossoms that float along a beam of minerality that makes this powerful Sauvignon Blanc absolutely super.
Dubbed by Wine Bible author Karen MacNeil as one of the "Super Sauvignons," a term she uses to illustrate a small group of wines that display the most exemplary expression of the grape, this is what most California Sauvignon Blancs aspire to be.
The wine pulls influence from Bordeaux through the use of fermentation in French barriques and the addition of 2% Sémillon. The combination, along with time aging in clay amphorae, ignites this release with textural poise. The mid-palate is incredibly creamy, yet the wine finishes with juicy stamina. In their "50 Best Whites Under $50" article, Bloomberg praises the Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc as "Long one of the most sophisticated whites in Napa Valley."
The blossoming Napa estate, one of the first adapters of organic viticulture in the region, acts as the primary source for the Sauvignon Blanc grapes, along with other family vineyards in Napa and Sonoma that share their idyllic wine-growing philosophy. Their vineyards feel alive, with bountiful cover crops and vineyard assistants in the form of bees and free-range chickens. "The idea of resource conservation has touched every decision that we've made," reveals celebrated winemaker Aaron Wineklauf. Drinking Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc feels like you're sipping on the essence of life itself.
Intentional winemaking and vineyard care have elevated Spottswoode to cult status—one of Napa's undisputed top producers. The 2019 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc is a rare addition to our offerings and an absolute must-have for all lovers of incredible white wine.
