Think Big

“For the concentration, depth, and the price, there’s nothing like it in Napa.”

That was the verdict our Master Sommelier, Sur Lucero, came to about the phenomenal 2019 Clay Shannon The David Red Blend. “You can print that,” he added. “This wine blew me away for the money.”

Sur had returned from a visit to the Clay Shannon estate, which covers 2,000 acres of the High Valley AVA on the east side of Clear Lake. After two long days of negotiations, he’d come home with a MASSIVE win. Here is a 100% estate grown, certified organic, high-elevation Bordeaux-style blend that’s about to be rated 93 points by Wine Enthusiast

Primarily composed of Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the winery’s best hilltop blocks, it delivers structure, polish, concentrated fruit, and the fine, earthy grit that’s a hallmark of high-elevation appellations like Howell Mountain.

Shannon’s property has been the talk of the town—especially since 100-point superstar Philippe Melka joined as a consultant. The Frenchman uttered a single word upon seeing the vast, sloping, sun-dappled Lake County hillsides for the first time: “Whoa.”

Shannon is working to create a self-sustaining farm that requires little in the way of agricultural inputs from outside his own property. No herbicides are used, and sheep graze through the carbon-trapping cover crops that intersperse the rows of vines, also enriching the soil with manure.

The estate’s hills are windier than at the lake level, but warmer in the evenings. These conditions help focus the ripening of the grapes. Berries are tiny, tannins are huge yet refined, and the resulting wine is so impressive it might inspire you to go see the place yourself.
