California’s Sparkling Star
Schramsberg is the most iconic sparkling-wine producer in the United States. Their bubblies are unquestionably best-in-class and channel the great maisons of Champagne in a generous, California style.
The 2019 Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Blancs Brut North Coast is a pure Chardonnay stunner with aromas of ripe Asian pears, white peaches, and lemon meringue that prepare the palate for crisp, taut flavors of apples, pears, and citrus zest, all lifted by hints of white flowers and baking spice.
When Jack and Jamie Davies revived the historic Jacob Schram vineyard and cellars in 1965, they had one goal in mind: to prove that world-class sparkling wines could be made in California. The Blanc de Blancs was the first wine Schramsberg produced that year, and it was America's first commercially produced Chardonnay-based sparkling wine. It gained notoriety and international recognition in 1972 when President Nixon served it at the historic "Toast to Peace" in Beijing, China.
The 2019 Blanc de Blancs is proof that this sparkler has earned its accolades. It’s sourced from top vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, and Marin Counties, given added depth with the addition of tiny lots of barrel-fermented Chardonnay, and then aged on the lees for more than two years.
The result is a wine that’s incredible on its own as an aperitif and a perfect pairing partner for shellfish, grilled fish, ceviche, and oysters. Today, with Jack and Jamie's son Hugh at the helm, Schramsberg’s Blanc de Blancs is as delicious as ever—and, as always, a stellar sparkling-wine value.
