There’s Nothing Like Old Vines
We’ve known Willie Sherer for a long time. The accomplished Master Sommelier has been one of the most reliable sources of hospitality, wisdom, and great wine we’ve ever come across.
Willie’s always had a nose for incredible vineyards, and his 2019 Remix Old Vines White is based on one of the more remarkable plots of Sauvignon Blanc in the Golden State: The Lolonis family’s organically- and dry-farmed vines, which were planted in 1942 and are believed to be the oldest Sauvignon Blanc plants in the United States. They provide an astounding level of concentration and complexity.
Every time we try one of the wines that Willie’s made, we’re blown away by the thought, care and execution that goes into the bottles. But his 2019 Remix Old Vine White might take the cake for the value that it provides. The Lolonia fruit makes up the majority, and he blends in just enough Sémillon to add mouthfeel, plus a hint of white peach and ginger to the Meyer lemon, green apple, and mandarin blossom flavors and aromas that come from the Sauv Blanc.
The result is a wine with fantastic balance between electric snappiness and friendly fruit. We drank our sample bottles too quickly, thanks to a spate of nice weather here in Napa. The Remix is perfect with grilled shrimp, but pairs delightfully with a Cobb salad as well. Here’s to Remix, the kind of white wine that seems to go with everything!
