Positively Royal: A RAEN Best-Ever Bottling

Robert Mondavi left an immense legacy, but his grandsons Carlo and Dante are not afraid to think just as big. With RAEN Pinot Noir, they’re setting the bar in Sonoma County, tapping the coast’s best vineyards and bottling beacons of terroir transparency and Burgundian elegance every single vintage.

If anyone knows impeccable vineyards and elite wines, it’s these two. After all, they grew up watching their grandfather and father oversee and craft 100-pointers at Opus One and Continuum. But they weren’t content to simply coast on the reputation of their last name. Finding inspiration in the structured style of Domaine Leflaive, they forged their own path in the wild Sonoma Coast—and with RAEN, they’ve created a Pinot Noir icon.

RAEN is the label that our Master Sommelier, Sur Lucero, called his “favorite brand of Sonoma Pinot Noir in the last decade." Their Pinots regularly appear on wine lists at MICHELIN-starred meccas like The French Laundry, Eleven Madison Park, and Saison, and have been called “world-class” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous.

In 2019, the Mondavis crafted two of the highest-scoring bottles in their history: the 99-point Sea Field Pinot and the 97-point Royal St. Robert Cuvée. We have tiny allocations of both wines, so we’ll give you the same advice that Galloni gave about RAEN wines in general: “Don’t miss them.”

The 97-point Royal St. Robert, grown on a Freestone site overlooking Bodega Bay, is every bit as impressive. Drawn from a selection of the finest barrels, it’s a fresh, vibrant wine with pristine fruit, crystalline acidity, and gorgeous focus—a masterclass in Coastal Pinot Noir that will only gain volume and complexity over the next decade.
