Back-Vintage Find from a Favorite Producer

Provenance Vineyards’ Napa Cabernet is one of the most-beloved wines in Wine Access history. A steakhouse icon, it’s one of the most reliably delicious, powerful bottlings in Napa.

This 2019 Howell Mountain Cab takes the lush seductiveness that’s made Provenance so beloved and marries that house style to the most powerful, intensely fruited region in Napa. The result is muscular and finessed all at once—and absolutely stunning five years after harvest.

Owners of the historic Hewitt Vineyard, which was originally planted in 1880, Provenance’s tasting room became a must-stop after lunch at the Rutherford Grill. Over the next decade, they drew a legion of fans for their beautiful house style, which married classic Rutherford dust to a silky polish and lush tannic profile that was easy to love.

Along the way, they added a few more vineyards to their stable, including some in prestige AVAs like Oakville and Howell Mountain—and they needed a way to show off their newly acquired sources. So they created their “Regional Exclusive” series, named because they were exclusive to their tasting room and showed off specific subregions of the valley.

One of our favorites in the series has always been their Howell Mountain: The powerful, mountain-fruit nature of the AVA is at its best when it’s polished and tamed a bit, and few do that as well as Provenance. Harvested at peak ripeness in a fantastic vintage, and then aged for nearly two years in prime French oak, it was a superstar from the moment it was bottled. Now it’s even better.
