How Do You Follow Up an Instant Classic?
Penfolds has reigned as Drinks International’s World’s Most Admired Wine Brand and landed atop Wine Spectator’s Top 100, and when the Australian icon expanded to California, they looked to the long term. They laid the groundwork for greatness by cultivating relationships with Napa Valley’s top growers and wineries—and pushed anticipation for Penfolds’ California debut to a feverish level.
Last year, Penfolds’ inaugural Bin 704 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley blew past two decades of expectations. Their second-ever Napa Cabernet is a dual-95-point stunner that delivers on a spectacular vintage and shows what happens when one of the world’s great wineries meets with some of the most sought-after vines in Napa Valley.
This is the new edition of the wine our Master Sommelier Sur Lucero deemed “an instant classic.” Boasting 95 points from James Halliday’s Wine Companion and Wine Enthusiast, where it also took home Editors’ Choice honors and won praise for how it “over delivers on its price point,” you simply won’t find a bottle that boasts better pedigree and provenance.
2019—a Napa vintage Wine Spectator rated 97 points and Vinous called “fabulous”—provided ideal conditions for growing superb Napa Cab. A rainy spring supplied plenty of moisture for the vines to draw on throughout the year, and a warm summer accelerated ripening. Once August hit, warm days and cool nights provided perfect conditions for the grapes to finish maturing, allowing for a slightly later harvest and long hang-times to achieve perfect phenolic development.
Now, after 17 months in 40% new French oak and more time in bottle, Penfolds’ 2019 marries the magic of California’s holy ground for Cabernet with one of the world's great wine estates.
