A Showstopper from a Barbaresco Icon

Paitin is one of our favorite wineries in Piedmont. We consider just about every wine from them a hit—but their 2019 Serraboella Barbaresco is more than that.

It’s a showstopper.

We were blown away by this bottle’s mesmerizing power and grace, and the most influential critics in the world were just as impressed: Wine Enthusiast gave it 95 points, Wine Advocate said it “reaches a perfect pitch between fruit ripeness and acidity” and declared it “a beautiful drinking experience,” and Antonio Galloni of Vinous, a Piedmont savant, called it “super impressive.”

Grown on the famous Serraboella cru in the village of Neive, this bottle shows exactly why MICHELIN-starred restaurants like SingleThread, Eleven Madison Park, Union Square Café, and Saison always carry Paitin wines. These are often among the region’s most structured and powerful releases, and when you pour this one with braised short ribs or a bowl of pillowy gnocchi, you’ll see why we always keep a case or more in our cellars.

Though officially founded by Benedetto Elia in 1796, Paitin’s roots in the region likely go back even deeper into Piedmont history. The estate is still in the hands of the Elia clan today, and the current generation of family winemakers are as classical and traditional in their approach as Barbaresco houses come.

Paitin is located in the village of Neive, known for producing some of the most Barolo-like bottlings of Barbaresco. Serraboella in particular can furnish muscular, complex wines, and in 2019, it saw particular gains in concentration and ageworthiness due to heat and strong winds.

This bottle delivers the freshness, immediacy, and violet-kissed aromatics that Barbaresco is known for, as well as tremendous cellaring potential.
