First Access to Piedmont’s Beloved Insider White
The first time Malvirà Arneis upended our assumptions, we were in Piedmont during October’s truffle season. We’d rolled into Alba on our Barolo and Barbaresco trip, expecting to find everyone drinking the region’s famous reds—only to discover this Malvirà Roero Arneis poured at Michelin-starred spots alongside truffle-dusted scrambled eggs.
Smitten with its sheer electric vibrancy and fleshy richness, we put the trip on hold to track down the producer. Soon we were walking the vineyards with Massimo and Roberto Damonte, who run the Malvirà estate, having inherited the business from their father. In 600 years the land has had only four owners, and their 40- to 50-year-old vines produce this premiere Arneis.
Shimmering bright gold, redolent of warm peach skin and elderflower, the 2019 release has done it again, blowing away our expectations and leaving us thirsting for more. We swooped in on a pallet at the first whisper of an opportunity, calling dibs on this favorite Italian white that packs creamy texture and saline minerality into every sip.
Vinous calls Malvirà “one of the most respected estates in the Roero and in all of Piedmont,” and one that “ranks among the very best Arneis wine producers in Italy.”
In fact, their south-facing Renesio vineyard was the cru where the Arneis grape was first identified in 1478. The secret to achieving the fabulous lemon-lime vibrancy and mouthwatering wet-stone minerality of their expression is the area’s unique geological makeup. The Roero soil is deeply layered with oceanic sediment and sand that dates back thousands of years, to when this part of the world lay under the sea. To this day, you can find fossilized shells scattered amongst the vineyards.
This will delight lovers of crisp white wines, but what the 2019 really homed in on is what we like best about it: those mouthwatering hints of Italian terroir, dried citrus peel, and almonds. The white wine of Barolo country, this is a fantastic showing and a serious value.
Crisp like Sancerre, but with the deceptive weightiness of top Chardonnay this white bursts with haute appeal and best-in-class pedigree.
