Chasing After Leviathan
In 2004, Andy Erickson put out the first vintage of Leviathan, a bold, small-lot passion project that refused to play by the rules. Ever since, if you’ve wanted to taste the best of any California vintage encapsulated in a single bottle, wrought by one of Napa’s cult winemakers, you’ve been chasing Leviathan—especially if you don’t want to break the bank.
True to its title, this mega-rich blend is one of the most reliable red bargains we know, dictated by nothing but the unerring palate of a 100-point winemaker and the best California fruit he can lay his hands on.
Erickson’s winemaking pedigree is second to none, and his client roster is pure gold: Screaming Eagle, Arietta, Dalla Valle, Harlan, Ovid, Saintsbury, Spottswoode, Staglin, and Hartwell. He works in partnership with his wife, the renowned viticulturist Annie Favia, whose own resume includes work with John Kongsgaard, Cathy Corison, and David Abreu.
Drinking the 2019 is like taking a tour of Northern California’s wine regions. In Sonoma, Moon Mountain contributes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petite Sirah, while Fountaingrove throws in Syrah and some of its own Cab Sauv; Napa adds some Coombsville Merlot; the Red Hills AVA in Lake County adds a third batch of Cab Sauv, along with a bit more Petite Sirah; and the Sierra Foothills AVA tosses in some of its own Syrah to round out the blend. It all comes together after 16 months in 100% French oak (25% new), adding the sumptuousness and spice that are Leviathan trademarks.
The other trademark? A price tag that becomes more unbelievable with each passing vintage. Cheers to another can’t-miss winner from Andy Erickson.
