“Another Stunning Vintage”

A few years ago, at the end of a long day, Wine Enthusiast Viticulturalist of the Year Miguel Luna told his wife: “If I ever have a wine label, I’m going to call it The %*$king Shovel.” The way he sees it, although the end product might be supremely sophisticated, making wine is pure hard work. It’s putting vines in the ground and scooping grape skins out of the fermenters… in other words, all shovels.

When Luna joined forces with Maayan Koschitzky, the prodigious talent who serves as Director of Winemaking for Philippe Melka, the pair delivered on Miguel’s promise. They opted for the French name “La Pelle.” It’s a clean version of “The %*$king Shovel.”

Now they’re delivering some of the most in-demand wines in California.

“The Napa Valley Cabernet is really meant to be a showcase of the vintage, not a showcase of one site,” Maayan told us when we caught up with him over the weekend (in the middle of harvest!). Sourced from six stellar sites—including the Red Hen, Ceniza, and Alluvium Vineyards that go into $110 single-origin La Pelle bottlings—the 2019 hails from a gorgeous Napa Valley season.

You know the story of the name. Now’s your chance to get to know the glory of this wine. You’ll understand why collectors all over are making La Pelle wines so scarce.
