High-Altitude, 96-Point Malbec!

The greatest red wines announce themselves the instant you put your nose in the glass. They possess an unmistakable force that grabs you by the collar and draws you in.

The powerful, structured, intensely aromatic 2019 Kaiken Indómito is precisely what we want in a Malbec—and precisely what led the judges at the 2021 Decanter World Wine Awards to give it a staggering 96-point score.

Crafted under the watchful eye of winemaking legend Aurelio Montes, Sr., at a winery Wine Enthusiast called “a symbol of high quality in Argentina’s wine industry,” this searing steal underwent fermentation in concrete tanks, which means there’s nothing to get in the way of the red and black fruit that barrel in on your senses.

The Kaiken Indómito comes from the Paraje Altamira district of the Uco Valley. The key to quality here is the combination of the hot days and cold nights that come with the extremely high altitude (almost 4000 feet). Hand-harvested grapes grown in Altamira's chalky, gravelly soils in the alluvial fan of the Tunuyán River yield wines with gorgeous, brooding dark fruit, fabulous structure, and marked minerality. Combine this with Montes’s expertise earned through 50 years of wine harvests, and all the elements are in place for a glass of Malbec with pristine fruit and sumptuous concentration.

Our tasting panel couldn’t get enough of this one—we marveled at the aromas of plums and red berries followed by a plush, sweet-fruited palate and a long, intense finish. Tasted blind, you’d be hard-pressed not to peg this one as a much more expensive Malbec.
