Doubling Down on Gary Farrell

Gary Farrell’s Russian River bottling was our top-selling Sonoma County Chardonnay last year—and it would have be this year too, had our allocation been big enough!

So when the call came saying that a restaurant group was asleep at the wheel and their share was up for grabs? Well, we FLOORED it.

Wine Access members snap up Gary Farrell’s Chardonnay because it easily stands with Russian River luminaries that cost twice as much, and the 2019 brings an irresistible combination of richness, elegance, and cool-climate vibrancy to the glass. It boasts 94 points and Editors’ Choice honors from Wine Enthusiast, which gushed about a previous vintage: “This wine offers such tremendous value and quality—it should be on everyone's go-to list for Russian River Valley Chardonnay.”

Built on grapes from the fog-shrouded Westside Farms, the wine gains concentration and structure from grapes from the Allen Vineyard and the famed Rochioli Vineyard, which has been a go-to for Chardonnay superstars like David Ramey. Fruit from the Bacigalupi Vineyard adds floral aromatics and stone-fruit notes, while Wente-clone Chardonnay from Olivet Lane brings bright citrus and excellent acidity.

The winemaker at the helm is Theresa Heredia, who cut her teeth in Burgundy before running Freestone Winery for Joseph Phelps. She brought her deft touch to this stellar fruit and absolutely NAILED the 2019. For the Wine Access members who rate this bottling over four stars—and for all Chardonnay fans—this one is cause for celebration.
