Reliably Special…But Rarely Like This

Fuligni possesses one of the most coveted vineyards in all of Brunello. Their land, which lies in “one of the best positions in the appellation” according to Wine Advocate, is brutally difficult to work. The vines struggle in the rocky soils, producing gorgeous hand-picked Sangiovese grapes that deliver incredible concentration and density in the glass.

Since the yields are tiny and only 10 percent of Fuligni’s estate is planted to vines, the demand for this wine always outpaces supply. In the outstanding 2019 vintage, Fuligni produced not only one of the best wines of the decade, but one of Brunello’s wines of the vintage, a stunner that earned 98 points from James Suckling.

The 2019 vintage is already being hailed as a classic in Brunello: It produced wines with beautiful concentration and intensity and an aristocratic sense of poise. In short, it’s the kind of year that suited the estate brilliantly, and Wine Advocate declared “there is a lot of momentum behind Fuligni, and the wines keep getting better,” on the back of this performance.

The glowing a 98-point score from James Suckling places this as the second-best edition of the decade—ahead of even the magical 2016—and it boasts loud praise across the board. Longtime Enthusiast editor Kerin O’Keefe, who wrote the defining book on Brunello, gave it a 97, calling it “a stunner.” Tough-scorers Vinous and the Wine Advocate both awarded it 96 points, the latter describing it as “rich and beautifully concentrated.”

This is a crimson stunner that deserves a place in everyone’s cellar: wide-ranging collectors, dyed-in-the-wool devotees of Italian varieties, or any lover of red wine. It’s an absolute benchmark for the Brunello di Montalcino appellation.
