After Kosta Browne, This Was Next
David Hajl was CEO of Kosta Browne as it went white-hot, taking a small brand and building its reputation and reach into major-player status. So when he left to start his own project in 2015, the wine world took note.
And what he’s done since with his own Domaine Della has more than lived up to its promise.
It starts with the vineyards that Della works with: names like Ritchie, Soberanes, and Terra de Promissio. These are some of the greatest sites on the Sonoma Coast, and the Ritchie Vineyard makes up the backbone of today’s 2019 Chardonnay.
Ritchie Vineyard sits on Sonoma’s famous Sandy Goldridge Loam soils and literally eyes Kistler’s iconic Block 7 site directly across Trenton-Healdsburg Road. Ritchie falls smack in the center of the Russian River appellation and Ramey’s block, planted by Kent Ritchie in 1972, is comprised of Old Wente Clones, which eke out thick-skinned, small berries that possess fabulous concentration and phenolic complexity.
In short, this is ground zero for California’s best Chardonnay vineyards, making this vibrant Chardonnay worth every penny of its $78 price at the cellar door. That's not what you'll pay, however.
