A Mineral Filled, Top 100 Cellar Selection
The start of 2019 in the Loire had winemakers from Nantes to Orléans on edge. Hailstorms and a late-spring cold snap hampered flowering and lowered yields. Things were looking dim—until a hot summer swooped in and turned the tide. A dry spell stressed the vines, spurring them to produce intense, concentrated berries with superb flavor. When all was said and done, Wine Spectator gave the vintage in Loire 94 points, a rating that tied it for the best ever for the region's Chenin Blanc.
Vigneron Frédéric Bourillon took full advantage of the immaculate grapes, turning out a 94-point stunner that Wine Enthusiast named one of their Top 100 Cellar Selections of the year.
Once the wine hits your palate, there’s a pas de deux between expansive richness and intense minerality that’s the signature of so many great white wines. Flavors of orchard fruit are cut by green almonds and chalky acidity before resolving in a long finish, and there’s plenty of structure that will allow the wine to blossom even further in the cellar.
Domaine Bourillon Dorléans has everything we look for in a world-class producer: a long history, exceptional talent, and top-tier vineyards. The Bourillon family has made wine in the hillsides around the town of Rochecorbon for three generations. Along the way, they acquired the two hectares of vineyards that produce the mineral-driven and intense L’Indigène.
After hand-harvesting, a careful selection in the vineyard, and nine months of aging in older oak barrels, this is a paragon of classically dry, steely Chenin. With its fierce minerality and bright acidity, it’ll easily improve over the next decade in your cellar, gaining complexity every inch of the way.
