Serious & Seriously Delicious Sancerre
We haven’t been able to stop obsessing over Daniel Chotard’s exquisite 2019 Sancerre since our first bottles hit shore. Crystalline and complex, powerful yet precise, one sip is enough to show you why Sancerre stands as the worldwide benchmark for Sauvignon Blanc—and why the region has no better exemplar than Chotard.
We landed this allocation thanks to our friendship with the legendary importer who brought Chotard to the US, and to call it a Wine Access favorite doesn’t do it justice. It’s been a must-have for top restaurants like NYC’s Tribeca Grill, expertly curated shops from coast to coast, and anyone interested in the great white wines of the world. We’re proud to bring it to you.
The Chotard family holdings predate the French Revolution, so their mastery of this complex terroir isn’t surprising. In the modern era, Daniel Chotard has been quietly making Sancerre with an old-school sense of place, and in 2011 he passed the torch to his son Simon, who has elevated the family’s wines to new heights.
Displaying a richness and a sense of dimension that speaks to the rigor of the Chotards’ farming and their attention to detail in the cellar, the 2019 is a standout. High-density vine plantings, hand-harvesting and sorting, and extended time lees aging—these practices were once central to Sancerre, but rare today, making Chotard a delicious value from an internationally renowned appellation.
Suffice it to say that whether you’re in Paris, New York, or Cincinnati, Chotard’s wines are much easier to find at top bistros like Tribeca Grill than on store shelves. It’s a superstar white wine that’s a mouthwatering throwback to the Sancerres that made the region what it is.
