A Pioneer Goes Back to The Future

The Compañia Vinícola del Norte de España—also known as “CVNE,” or the more pronounceable “CUNE”—is a pioneer in Rioja. They produced the first Spanish wine to earn the #1 spot on Wine Spectator’s Top 100, and they were the nation’s first winery to employ gravity-flow technology in the cellar.

So when they created their Viña Real brand and winery, it was with the explicit goal of making wines that pushed Rioja into a more modern age, with classic character but a polish typical of Bordeaux’s finest bottles.

That was a century ago. Since then, Viña Real has become one of the most important names in the region, crafting wines that speak of Rioja Alevesa, the sub-region it calls home.

Rioja Alevesa lies right along the famous Ebro River, and its proximity to the Cantabrian Mountains provides shelter from the wind and the influence of the Atlantic ocean, creating a moderate climate perfect for growing Tempranillo—and creating wines of exceptional complexity and concentration.

Their brand-new Bakeder bottling, inaugurated with this 2019 vintage, is named for the Basque word meaning “beautiful as peace,” a conception of harmony. It’s an explicit homage to the earliest Viña Real wines, when the winery was bottling wines after shorter rests in barrel to promote fruit and vibrancy—a bold statement in a region that sometimes venerates long aging time above all.

Made entirely from the prestigious village of Laguardia, in Alavesa, it spent just 11 months in French oak—which provides more polish and a more subtle impact than the American oak common in the 19th century and at old-school wineries today. The resulting wine showcases the beautiful fruit and character of Tempranillo with delightful purity.
