    Making History with Clos Pegase

Very few wineries making Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa are able to source entirely from estate vineyards.

But very few wineries in Napa have been around for 40 years.

Clos Pegase was able to buy their three primo vineyards long before Napa’s modern gold rush, giving them the ability to deliver high-quality, estate-grown Cabernet for significantly less than their peers. In 2019, they had a stunning vintage to work with—a year that will challenge the best of the century thus far—as well as the most talented winemaker in their history: Robin Akhurst.

Robin got his start working for the legendary Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy and Two Hands in Australia’s Barossa Valley, before a connection led him to a coveted position working under Thomas Rivers Brown. From there, he spent four years running a custom-crush project for Nils Venge, the Napa legend dubbed “The King of Cabernet”—and the first person in California to earn a perfect score from Robert Parker.

Hommage is Clos Pegase’s flagship red, a brooding Cabernet Sauvignon boasting a burly 15% ABV and a silky texture, thanks to aging in 50% new French oak. Akhurst was able to harness the pitch-perfect 2019 vintage to produce a bold bottle that’s packed with blackberries, dark cherries, and currants, layered with cedar, tobacco leaf, and a touch of vanilla. This wine exhibits beautiful Napa Valley ripeness and structure. Full-bodied and powerful, it’s built for the cellar but absolutely delicious now—you’ll be glad you have enough on hand to follow it on its entire journey.
