    Lebanon’s Defining Estate

Chateau Musar is more than 2000 miles from Bordeaux’s top estates and 1500 from the Super Tuscan icons. But when it comes to producing impressively structured, complex red wines, the historic winery is definitely in the same neighborhood.

Called “iconic” by The Wine Advocate, Musar defines Lebanese winemaking excellence. Their flagship bottling is a mainstay at MICHELIN-starred restaurants like The French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park. Their 2019 Musar Jeune, grown on younger vines in their organically certified vineyards, boasts the same vibrancy, personality, and outright excellence that has helped immortalize the Musar name.

Musar’s Bekaa Valley sites soak up 300 days of sunlight per year, imbuing the Cinsault, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon grown there with richness and intensity—and then the high-altitude temperatures drop precipitously overnight, preserving the grapes’ energy and acidity. The resulting wine is both dynamic and contemplative, powerful and intricate, with black fruit accented by cracked pepper, olive, earth, and licorice. Aged in concrete vats, it’s an unadorned expression of Bekaa Valley terroir.

The region’s winemaking history dates back 7000 years, and although various ancient texts reference its wine’s renown, no producer in Lebanon has ever captivated a worldwide audience like Musar.

Longtime Musar winemaker Serge Hochar was Decanter’s very first Man of the Year, and his dedication to crafting exceptional wines—even as civil war ravaged his country—has become the stuff of legend. By the time he passed in 2014, critics and collectors were mentioning Hochar and Musar in the same breath as Bordeaux First Growths.

Today, Serge’s son Gaston builds on his father’s legacy, and from the temperate 2019 vintage he’s crafted a lively, versatile, and fascinating wine.
