Plucked from the Haystack!

It's a real feat for a wine to score in the 96th percentile of its category in Decanter’s annual World Wine Awards.

Wines get tasted blind by a panel that includes Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers from all over the world. When a bottle is granted a gold medal, that award must be reconfirmed by two of the competition’s co-chairs—a tough crowd indeed.

So when such a bottle, like the 2019 Château Moulin de Bernat, racks up a gold medal and 95 points—beating out 436 other entries—you can bet that we’ll swoop in to lock down an allocation for Wine Access members.

In 2001, a then 23-year-old Frédérike Bouzon-Petit acquired Château Moulin de Bernat, located within Entre-Deux-Mers in St Antoine du Queyret. That’s pretty young, but her family has been in business since 1890, so she already had generations of knowledge to draw upon. Frédérike and her mother Françoise run this and two other family estates in the area’s gently rolling hills.

At Moulin de Bernat, Frédérike farms 16 hectares of 35-year-old vines—mostly Merlot plus some Cabernet Sauvignon—which benefit from well-draining clay-limestone soil on a plateau with excellent exposure. In 2019, she began farming organically, respecting the biodiversity of her land.

This red has it all: effortless drinkability and grace, organic winegrowing by accomplished women, and a great score to boot. We, like the judges at Decanter’s World Wine Awards, were smitten from the outset. We know you will be too.
