“A Complex, Mesmerizing Wine”

Antonio Galloni is not an easy guy to impress. He was the presumed heir to Robert Parker at Wine Advocate before leaving to start Vinous, and he tastes thousands of wines every year.

So when he gave the 2019 Château de Pressac a 95-point score, soon after he’d tasted through 800+ Bordeaux, plenty of people took notice. In his effusive review, he called it “a complex, mesmerizing wine” and “Seriously impressive. It's as simple as that.”

Fortunately, we already had our allocation guaranteed, thanks to our longtime relationship with the château. The fantastic 2019 is one of St.-Émilion’s standouts in a vintage that’s quickly gaining a reputation as one of the classically built stars of the last decade.

Masterminded by Jean-François Quenin—among the most respected château owners in the region—the supple, Merlot-led 2019 has exceeded everyone’s expectations.

Pressac has a deep winemaking history, with vineyards cultivated as early as 1775, but had fallen into disrepair in the late 20th century. Things began to turn around in 1997, when Quenin and his wife Dominique took over. They tore out the dilapidated vines and began replanting. Their backbreaking dedication to raising grapes of the highest quality—which involves working the soil with horses and handpicking the rows—earned the estate Grand Cru Classé status in 2012.

Quenin focuses on growing Malbec and Carménère grapes that possess the same taut balance and expressivity as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. While the Malbec and Carménère make up a smaller proportion of the blend, they give this St.-Émilion a deep, savory base and exquisite fruit notes that make it truly one of a kind.
