The wait has been long, but the timing could not have been better. That’s because 2019 was a flawless vintage in Napa Valley, and it resulted in one of the most sumptuous, extravagant, and voluptuous Caymus Cabernets ever made.

The Caymus name is so big that it can overshadow one of the most important facts about the winery: After five decades of success, it is still family-owned. In a valley where some of the most famous names have cashed in on their pioneering cachet by selling to much larger enterprises, Caymus is still run by the founding Wagner family. That alone makes it somewhat of a rarity. 

But it’s the wine, of course, that truly sets Caymus and the Wagners apart, and the family is still following the same path that put them on top. Dedicated as always to making a Napa Valley Cabernet that can thrive in the cellar but is approachable early, the Wagners achieve the Caymus signature style by letting their Cabernet grapes linger a little longer on the vine. 

This is not without risks, as an early winter can lead to crop loss. But the potential payoff—in ripe, concentrated, supple Cabernet Sauvignon—is huge. 

2019 was the perfect season for Caymus to give the grapes a little extra time. The end of the summer was warm, and it gave way to a cool mid-September and October. That meant an unhurried harvest, an absolute boon to any winemaker desiring to coax a little more richness out of each grape.
