Collectible Barbaresco Is Rarely This Affordable

In the world of collectible Italian wine, Santo Stefano is one of the most important names to know.

Among the greatest vineyards in Piemonte, it’s the benchmark site of Neive, which produces some of the most epic—and expensive—Nebbiolos ever to hail from east of Alba.

Bruno Giacosa’s iconic red labels from the site often traded for well north of $500 when he made them, but since 2011 the grapes he purchased to make those wines returned to their original owners: the Stupino family of Castello di Neive, whose winery is on one of the hottest streaks in Italy.

In 2019, Castello di Neive took those vines and produced one of the modern era’s great Piemontese wines—one that scored 97 points from Wine Enthusiast, tying it for the highest-ranked Barbaresco from that banner vintage.

Called “fragrant and refined” and “full-bodied and structured” by Enthusiast critic Kerin O’Keefe—who literally wrote the defining book on Barolo and Barbaresco—this standout won Cellar Selection honors, a fitting award for a bottle that will age effortlessly for close to two decades.

Many of the vines on Castello de Neive’s property date back to the 1960s and 70s, leading to low yields and a distinctive blend of concentration and elegance.

This is a meditative, majestic Barbaresco that encourages you to slow down and take your time. If you can wait 5–10 years, the payoff will be magnificent. Celebrate it with a luxurious white truffle linguine—or a decadent grilled cheese and truffle sandwich. If you love to experience Nebbiolo in its bold, youthful state, braise some short ribs and start decanting the bottle once you slide your Le Creuset into the oven.
