“As a Sangiovese Lover This Is Literally Everything I Look for in a Wine”

Castelnuovo Berardenga, just an hour north of Montalcino, is one of Chianti Classico’s most prestigious subzones. Famed for its bold reds that show a stylistic kinship to their Brunello brethren, the area is home to heavy-hitter Chianti Classico producers like Fèlsina, Petroio, and Podere Le Boncie.

Wine Access members have their own go-to cleanup hitter in this lineup: Castello di Bossi, which Wine Advocate once said “delivers one of the absolute best expressions of Chianti Classico from Castelnuovo Berardenga.”

Bossi’s 2019 Chianti Classico boasts 92-points and Editors’ Choice honors from Wine Enthusiast, who loved its “savory, elegantly structured palate.” Organically grown in a vintage Wine Spectator called “stellar,” the wine is so supple and fruity—and smashed our expectations so handily—we knew we had to nab an allocation for our members.

The terroir of the southerly Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone is renowned for turning out richly concentrated masterpieces. This is due in part to the warm climate in the southern tip of the Chianti Classico DOCG, close to Siena. This microclimate, in combination with a good growing season, supplied this 2019 with its ripeness and balance.

The Bacci family acquired the 14th-century Bossi estate in 1980 and hired superstar enologist Alberto Antonini. Thanks to his efforts, Castello di Bossi has produced critically acclaimed hits like this Chianti Classico, which shows the kind of harmony and sophistication that typically requires a decade to achieve.

For over ten years now, Castello di Bossi’s fans have been telling us things like “As a Sangiovese lover this is literally everything I look for in a wine.” Bottlings like the 2019 Castello di Bossi illustrate why Chianti Classico―along with Rioja―is a world epicenter of red-wine value.
