Harvest Dreams
The 2019 vintage was one of Brunello’s best ever.
With 5/5 stars from Decanter, 98 points from Wine Spectator, and praise from every corner of the wine world, it’s already being feted as a classic. Vinous called it “the vintage we’ve all been waiting for,” while Kerin O’Keefe, who wrote THE book on Brunello, said “I’ve never tasted so many drop-dead-gorgeous young Brunellos from a single vintage.”
We’ve got a spectacular gem for you from Casisano. Neighbor to Podere le Ripi and Ciacci Piccolomini, the estate “is crafting delicious, ripe Brunellos with flair and finesse,” in the words of Brunello expert Kerin O’Keefe. And their 2019 delivers intoxicating aromas of ripe cherry, plum, and cranberry accented by dried orange peel, rose petal, and crushed herbs, it’s a structured yet elegant bottling that showcases the glory of this fantastic season.
Surrounded by hundred-year old forests and overlooking the famed Sant’Antimo valley,The vineyards here are at high altitude and enjoy perfect southwest exposure. The wines are raised for three years in neutral Slavonian botti, then given a six-month rest in bottle.
In 2019, the Tommasi family had a dream vintage to work with: Spring rainfall in Montalcino and a warm, dry summer made for a near-perfect growing season. Stark diurnal temperature shifts kept a balance between fruit and acid, allowing the late-maturing Sangiovese to ripen slowly, making each grape a gold mine. Casisano completed their harvest in a leisurely way by mid-October—it’s precisely what every winemaker hopes for.
