A Sangiovese Benchmark in an Important DOCG
Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a benchmark, from a winery that maximizes the full potential of their appellation. And when that appellation is a DOCG in Tuscany—the home of Sangiovese—the bar is extremely high. Competition is stiff.
Paola De Ferrari Corradi has met and bested that competition, year after year, for almost 60 years now. She and her sons Luca and Nicolò have won the prestigious Tre Bicchieri award from Gambero Rosso nine out of the last 10 years, a feat that few wineries in Italy can match.
The tough-grading Decanter rated Boscarelli’s 2019 Vino Nobile 94 points, calling it “a plentiful, chewy, exuberant mouthful.” If you’re a fan of great Sangiovese from Chianti Classico and Montalcino and want to experience one of the best producers of Vino Nobile, look no further.
Born to a venerable Poliziana family near Siena, Egidio Corradi purchased two small, semi-abandoned farms in 1962 in Cervognano, a stunning corner of the old Etruscan part of Montepulciano. The farms were largely planted to grains, then a more lucrative crop than Sangiovese, but Corradi had a different idea. In the mid-1960s, as part of an effort spearheaded by Egidio’s daughter Paola and her husband Ippolito De Ferrari, the family began replanting the property, now named Poderi Boscarelli.
Today, Nicolò manages viticulture and Luca makes the wines, along with in-house oenologist Mary Ferrara and renowned consultant Maurizio Castelli, who also advises luminaries like Castellare di Castellina in Chianti Classico and Le Ragnaie in Montalcino.
This wine is a paragon of Sangiovese from the region, and it shows what a great terroir plus the pride and hard work of one family can do.
