Aim High

Tapiz has so much going for it, it’s almost chilling.

Sourced entirely from a gorgeous high-altitude vineyard in San Pablo, the Alta Collection Chardonnay is an attention-grabbing production from the appellation that Vinous has called a “jewel of the Uco Valley.” With winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet (of Petrus fame) behind its creation, it’s no surprise that this Chardonnay is a stunner.

At 4,430 feet, Tapiz’s Alta vineyard is one of the highest wine-growing locales in the world. Chardonnay is rarely planted this high up, yet this elevation combines incredible sun exposure with San Pablo’s water-retaining limestone in a combination that yields acidity, minerality, and refreshing herbal notes in rare harmony. With crisp, ripe yellow fruit notes that dazzle on the palate, this bottle trades the buttered toast style of some Chardonnays for a highly balanced mouthfeel that is simultaneously fruity and creamy.

Tapiz is just one of the many Mendoza wineries that have drawn the likes of Berrouet from Europe to Argentina in recent years. The region is famous for being a playground for established winemakers from the continent, a shift that sometimes comes with a cost. Over 44 years at  the Petrus estate, Berrouet produced legendary bottles that regularly sell for more than most car payments. So when he left Bordeaux for Mendoza to team up with Fabian Valenzuela and make wine at Tapiz, we were prepared to pay a pretty penny for his next creation.

Yet, in the Alta Collection, Berrouet has brought the boldness of the Uco Valley to bear at a price that is decidedly un-Petrus. Filled with flavor notes like praline and toffee that balance crisp apple and tangy lemon on the palate, you’ll be reminded why this terroir is singular— not to mention one of the most exciting wine-growing areas in the world, where delicious discoveries abound.

In this bottle, we see another reason to trust the master. This Chardonnay is a no-brainer value, and a beacon of Argentine terroir.
